Maureen Doherty, the protagonist of Be My Ghost, inherits an inn in a Florida beach town. It was left to her by Penelope Josphine Gray, a woman who is not a relative and has an unknown connection to Maureen. Since Maureen is about to lose her job at a Massachusetts retail establishment when she learns of the inheritance, she decides to relocate to Haven, FL, and run the inn. Maureen and Finn, her dog, face a few challenges as they acclimate to life at the Florida inn, including the murder of a ghosthunter.
Although she claims to not believe in ghosts, Maureen befriends one in her first days as a live-in owner. She also has a tense relationship with Elizabeth, the inn manager, who thinks that Penelope should have left the inn to her. Unfortunately, Elizabeth has little business savvy, and Maureen is eager to apply some of her retail experience to making the inn a profitable enterprise. Carol Perry creates an exciting cast of characters to flesh out the murder mystery and leaves the reader wondering how Maureen landed her inheritance.
Tales of haunted inns are familiar, and this easy-to-read story is a fictionalized account of a supposed haunted inn in Gulfport, Florida. The author has given the area the fictional name Haven, Florida, and calls the real Peninsula Inn The Haven House Inn.
