The publisher’s blurb upon release of this book practically gives the whole story away. So, was it worth reading? YES! Emily Henry creates endearing characters, and I enjoyed getting to know Poppy Wright, a free spirit who writes for a travel magazine, lives in New York City, and travels for a profession. She is honest and straightforward about just about everything except when it comes to admitting to Alex Nilsen that she loves him as more than a friend. Alex is a high school English teacher and prefers reading to almost any activity that Poppy or others can suggest. Describing him as stoic is an understatement. He has his life as controlled as possible, and he seems a total misfit for Poppy’s random nature and wanderlust. However, he is a caring and nurturing man, and it was a pleasure to learn about him in this novel.
Poppy and Alex met in college and became good friends despite apparent differences and seemingly having nothing in common. Much of their relationship is based on mutual teasing and fun-based harassment. Their differences, however, create their commonalities; they put real effort into understanding each other and viewing situations from the other’s vantage point, which leads to excellent communication and a sound relationship. For ten years, both clearly enjoy their yearly vacations together and treasure their inside jokes and conversations. While maintaining their once-a-year rendezvous, each has relationships with others and sometimes introduces them to their significant others. Of course, since they are genuinely in love with each other, Alex and Poppy are super critical of the people the other chooses for relationships. Alex and Poppy are just afraid to express their love and become vulnerable. While their friendship is built upon solid communication, multiple miscues and communication blunders define their love. Their conversations and adventures are both poignant and funny. This author is a master at creating believable characters that will make you laugh and cry simultaneously.
