It’s a page-turner. It’s a modern take on an old-style mystery. It’s about wealthy people and their disregard for morality. How did the two women in the upscale Thornfield Estates really die? It’s not entirely original, but a worthwhile read nevertheless.
I like “plain” Jane, who grew up in foster care, has a big secret and plays out a “rags to riches” scenario with the alluring Mr. Rochester. She has enough street smarts to be a multidimensional likable character. It is clear that Eddie’s first wife, Bea, is going to resurface. It is fun to witness Jane learning how the other half lives and verifying that the women in her new affluent neighborhood lead pretentious lives. They are precisely what she thought they were—superficial and meaningless.
It turns out that there is more scandal than Jane bargained for, and her instincts are more reliable than she imagined. It is incredible that Eddie almost convinced her to trust him!
